In November 2019, the qathet Region Poverty Reduction Background Report was completed to begin initiating the process to reduce poverty in the region. This report reflects the first step in gathering the necessary information to better understand the landscape of poverty in the qathet region. The initial work in developing a poverty reduction strategy was funded by Vancouver Coastal Health and First Credit Union.

In June 2020, the region received a $50,000 grant from the provincial Poverty Reduction Planning & Action Program through the Union of BC Municipalities to develop a comprehensive strategy on poverty reduction. This strategy will be in developed in collaboration with the City of Powell River, qathet Regional District, and the Tla’amin Nation.
The Regional Poverty Reduction Strategy will aim to eliminate poverty in the qathet region by developing a roadmap with an implementation plan, and considerations moving forward. This regional project is in partnership with Lift Community Services, First Credit Union, and Vancouver Coastal Health.
