Poverty Reduction

Introduction

People are not poor, rather poverty is an experience that anyone can face. Poverty denies people the resources and opportunities they need to fully participate in all aspects of personal and community life.

As part of a vision to make qathet a region where everyone thrives, the City of Powell River, qathet Regional District, and the Tla’amin Nation have developed a strategy to end poverty in our region. These efforts were aided with invaluable assistance from Lift Community Services, First Credit Union, and many local organizations and citizens.

Background information

In November 2019, Vancouver coastal Health and First Credit Union funded the qathet Region Poverty Reduction Background Report. This report was the first step in gathering the necessary information to understand the landscape of poverty in the qathet region. Vancouver Coastal Health and First Credit Union funded this initial step in developing a poverty reduction strategy.

In June 2020, the region received a $50,000 grant from the provincial Poverty Reduction Planning & Action Program through the Union of BC Municipalities to develop a comprehensive strategy for poverty reduction. In January, the regional governments hired consultants to support the development of the strategy which was completed in November, 2021.
