Overview of Departments

Administration

The Administration Department’s function is to act as primary policy advisor to City of Powell River Council, staff and the citizens of Powell River. The Department also carries out the statutory functions of corporate administration as required by the Community Charter and the Local Government Act, in a professional manner.

Properties, Development and Communications

The Properties, Development and Communications Department is responsible for the management of city owned properties and provincial crown leases; community economic development programming; oversight of third party service agreements and city owned corporations; as well as internal and external Communications.

Financial Services

The Department’s function is to develop systems, policies and procedures that will assist all departments in managing their areas of responsibility and will ensure the fiscal responsibility and integrity of the City in both the short and long term. The Department also provides exemplary service and efficiently delivers timely and reliable financial information to its customers, citizens, organizational departments, and Council.

Fire Rescue

Powell River Fire Rescue is a composite career, paid-on-call Department. The Department has two fire stations. The main station, #1 Fire Hall at 6865 Courtenay Street, is the primary administration office and is staffed 24 hours / seven days a week by career firefighters. The #2 Fire Hall is located at 6459 Sutherland Avenue and provides supplemental coverage for the Wildwood area with paid-on-call firefighters responding from Wildwood, and career members responding from the #1 Fire Hall. Powell River Fire Rescue provides a variety of emergency response to the community, including firefighting, first responder, rescue, and assessing and limiting exposure to hazardous material leaks and spills.

Operations and Engineering

Operations

The Operations Department is responsible for the operations and maintenance of the City's Infrastructure. This includes the following areas:

  • Disinfection and delivery of water

  • Collection and treatment of sanitary sewerage

  • Collection of storm drainage

  • City-owned buildings

  • City-owned equipment

  • Solid waste and recycling curbside pick-up

  • Road network (including sidewalks and signage)

  • Harbours

  • Airport

  • Conventional Transit system

Engineering

The Engineering Department is responsible for the technical aspects of the City's infrastructure, capital projects and land development. This includes providing technical support for operations in water, sewer and roads. The Engineering Department is also responsible for the maintenance of the City's Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Asset Management Plan.

Parks, Recreation and Culture

The City of Powell River’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Department strives to enhance the quality of life for all citizens through the facilitation of recreation services, providing and maintaining parks and green space, and supporting the arts and culture in a positive, healthy, and equitable manner.

The Department operates and maintains facilities that offer a wide variety of arts, cultural, fitness, and indoor recreation opportunities. It also services the outdoor recreational needs of the community by maintaining several neighborhood parks, sports fields and trails.

You can learn something new, socialize with other like-minded individuals, or get fit and stay fit. Take advantage of the many opportunities offered at the wonderful, well-equipped recreation and arts facilities along with the many beautiful parks located throughout the city. The Department also maintains strong bonds with several community organizations, from minor sports groups to cultural organizations, who utilize our facilities and services to deliver a wide range of programs and events throughout the year.

Planning Services

The Planning Services Department is responsible for overseeing the development of policies, programs and objectives that support the vision and goals identified by the City’s Official Community Plan. The Department oversees responsible land use planning within the community that includes the integration of transportation, infrastructure, environment, heritage and culture, First Nations’ relations and the direct development of the City.

Planning Services is responsible for the review and processing of development applications, including Official Community Plan and Zoning Bylaw amendments, Development Permits, Development Variance Permits and Subdivisions.
