Mayor’s Welcome

Mayor David J. Formosa

We live in and respect the traditional territory of our friends and partners, the Tla’amin Nation.

It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to the City of Powell River. We have a wonderful mix of urban and rural amenities, affordable cost of living in a safe environment, excellent education services, a vibrant arts and culture community, stunning sea-to-mountain recreational areas, passionate spirit of community, and active volunteerism.

The following are a few important features about Powell River…

The Powell River Townsite was designated a National Historic District of Canada in 1995, one of only seven in Canada and the only one in Western Canada. A very prestigious designation, it recognizes the Historic Townsite, remarkably intact with more than 400 original buildings contained within a 1910 town plan designed after the Arts and Craft architecture style. It is an outstanding historical asset for the entire country.

For outdoor enthusiasts, we offer the Sunshine Coast Trail, a 180-kilometre trail that traverses a wide variety of landscapes, from coastal shorelines, along creeks and lakes, through old growth forests to panoramic mountaintops. It is the only free hut-to-hut hiking experience in Canada. We also boast a vast network of multi-use trails on the Upper Sunshine Coast.

We annually host the BC Bike Race, earning us a reputation as a world-class biking destination. The event is consistent with our community values, lifestyles and our shared vision for a healthy future. Our numerous beaches, pristine lakes and mountains are also the envy of many communities.

We are rich in arts and culture. Powell River Academy of Music organizes and hosts the international choral festival, Kathaumixw (Coast Salish First Nations word meaning a gathering together of different peoples), every two years. More than 30 choirs from around the world participate in each festival. Events such as this attract widespread recognition, and in 2004, helped earn Powell River the title Cultural Capital of Canada. Powell River is also extremely proud to host the Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy (PRISMA), which provides in-depth orchestral training for music students and aspiring professionals, working alongside internationally established artists from the world’s finest symphony orchestras.

City of Powell River Council is committed to enhancing the sustainability of our community, which includes making our structural and social environments accessible and inclusive to everyone. Our community has been showcased across Canada as a model of best practice in making structures accessible to people with disabilities.

Our doors are always open for investors and entrepreneurs. If you have a business idea you wish to pursue, please let us know how we can be of assistance. Council recognizes the importance of fostering economic viability while preserving a vibrant, safe and healthy community.

Our Council and residents are proud to call Powell River our home and we invite you to discover for yourself the truth of why we have earned the title The Pearl on the Sunshine Coast.
