Given its waterfront setting, the City of Powell River features several popular beach areas. While the majority of Powell River’s ocean foreshore is rocky, sandy beaches in the City can be located at both ocean and lake locations.
Powell River’s Willingdon Beach is located near the community’s Marine Avenue business district and features an adjoining campground that is popular year-round. Willingdon Beach has sandy sections and the water is shallow when the tide is high. The beach has a park area upland from the water, featuring a playground, plus the Forestry Museum. There are also washroom facilities at the beach.
Located on Powell Lake, Mowat Bay is a City park with a sandy beach. There is a washroom facility at the beach as well as a boat launch. Mowat Bay is a popular place for sunning and swimming in the summertime. It’s a great place to go for a picnic. Mowat Bay also features a rope swing, known to Powell River residents as a zunga.
Just a short distance from Mowat Bay, in Cranberry, is Lindsay Park. While the beach area is no longer sandy, and is no longer a popular swim area, it is picturesque and a fun place to go with kids, because there is an adjacent playground in the park. It’s also enjoyable just to sit on the park benches to enjoy the view.
Gibsons Beach is located at the City’s most northerly reach, past Wildwood and close to the Tla’amin Nation. The beach offers a mix of sandy and rocky areas and features a boat launch. Gibsons Beach offers great views of the City of Powell River and is a great place to go for a picnic.
