The City of Powell River picks up garbage every week, Monday to Friday. The City collects from 5,100 locations, including residences, parks and civic locations. The City does not do commercial collections. Commercial collections are taken care of by private enterprise.
A garbage tag is required to be clearly affixed to garbage bags for collection. Bags should be placed in a container or protected from animals. It’s the homeowner’s responsibility to protect their garbage from animals. Tags cost $2 and are for sale at:
Powell River City Hall
Canada Safeway Ltd
Mitchell Brothers Merchants Ltd
Powell River Recreation Complex
Shoppers Drug Mart
Top of the Hill Grocery and Gas Bar
Townsite Grocery Store
Garbage containers should be placed at curbside in a visible location. Containers should not be blocked by parked vehicles on the roadway so that the garbage trucks and the operators can have easy access to the garbage. The maximum weight of a garbage bag is 12 kilograms, or 26.5 pounds. If garbage is overweight, it will be left at curbside, tagged as overweight and rejected. Households should have their garbage materials out at the curbside in an animal resistant container by 7:30 am because collection times can vary.
The City of Powell River has two modern garbage trucks that are capable of automated garbage pickup. The trucks were purchased in 2017. By providing the greater capacity trucks, the City is reducing greenhouse gas emissions because less trips are being made to take garbage to the Augusta facility.
For more information on what is not accepted in the garbage stream, please read our waste guide.
Garbage collected by the City of Powell River is taken to Augusta Recyclers south of town, where it is transported by City Transfer to Rebanco, Washington State, for landfilling. Homeowners are encouraged to recycle and dispose of organic waste locally to cut down on the amount of garbage that is being shipped to Washington State.
Dumping of residential household waste in City-owned bins, such as those at the harbour, is illegal.
