Students will receive works yard tour during Public Works Week

On May 3rd, 2018, City of Powell River Council proclaimed May 20 to 26th as Public Works Week in Powell River.
As part of a national initiative through the CPWA (Canadian Public Works Association), this week is celebrated in communities across North America to educate the general public about the value and necessities of public works projects throughout North America.
Powell River Operational Services branch will be hosting local elementary schools on Thursday May 24th at the city works yard to demonstrate many public works functions that are completed on a day-to-day basis, including a backhoe demonstration, a flusher truck and CCTV camera display, plus information on road repairs. The students from Grade 3 and 4 classes from five local schools will also be able to “touch a truck” and will be shuttled through the yard on a transit bus.
Since 1960, the American Public Works Association has sponsored National Public Works Week. Across North America, more than 30,000 members in the US and Canada use this week to energize and educate the public on the importance of public works to their daily lives: planning, building, managing and operating at the heart of their local communities to improve everyday quality of life.
