Media Release - Fish Cleaning Stations Closed

May 03, 2018
Sea lion threat closes fish cleaning stations

Due to the presence of sea lions in the area, the fish cleaning stations at the North Boat Harbour will be closed until further notice. The sea lion has been coming to the harbour for a couple years, showing up in May and usually vacating in a few weeks provided the source of food is limited.
All fish catch is to be cleaned at people’s residences or at sea to lessen the danger of contact with these large sea mammals.
According to a notice from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, sea lions and seals are dangerous and should not be disturbed. They bite and can carry harmful diseases. Fisheries and Oceans Canada has stated that for people’s safety, they should not touch or feed these animals.
To report injured, distressed or dead marine mammals, readers can call the Fisheries and Oceans Canada 24-hour reporting number, which is 1-800-465-4334.
