Clarification of Burning Regulations

BURNING REGULATIONS
POWELL RIVER FIRE RESCUE

All outdoor burning is prohibited within the City limits year round.  This includes but is not limited to: backyard campfires, beach fires, wood-burning chimeneas, fire pits and makeshift woodstoves or other wood-burning devices.
Burning is regulated through the Backyard Burning Bylaw 1931 and the Fire Prevention Bylaw 1932.   These bylaws take precedent over Provincial Fire Regulations.
The exceptions to this prohibition are as follows:

  • Fire pits, bowls or barbeques that are fuelled by propane, gel, charcoal or natural gas are permitted; however, flame height must be kept under 6”.
  • Campfires within registered sites at Willingdon Beach Campground. Campsite fires are subject to bans dependent on weather conditions.
  • Special Occasion fires for public events are approved by permit only by the Fire Chief.
  • Backyard burning for the purpose of removal of yard waste is allowed during the months of April and November only. Permits and other restrictions apply.
